Black plastic can help the soil retain heat and keep weeds out. Use a thick gauge, like 6 mils, because thinner plastic will rip in the wind. Lay the plastic over your soil. Use a pitchfork to make holes. Plant your vegetables.

However, when you plant trees or perennials in pots, you have to find a sheltered spot for them during the winter. An unheated garage works well, or they may survive if they’re set against the building and out of the wind.
